Not many rings have ever surfaced on the auction block from the historic first Stanley Cup championship by an expansion team. The Flyers' 1973-74 season began with Kate Smith making a surprise debut live performance of her good-luck-charm rendition of "God Bless America." Then Bernie Parent, Bobby Clarke, Dave Schultz and Bill Barber led their fellow Broad Street Bullies to the first of two straight NHL titles. This Balfour 14K-gold, size 10-1/2 ring, which features a large orange stone and two small authentic diamonds, was bestowed upon Flyers advertising director Ivan Shlichtman, of whom Flyer coach, scout and exec Joe Watson once said, "Ivan Shlichtman was the best, and he helped me out tremendously. He taught me the technology and the things to say and words to use. I used to go with him a lot on sales calls and learned how to make a sales presentation. Ivan was the best, the very best."
